What Are Superfoods, Exactly?

What Are Superfoods, Exactly?

Superfood is a term you hear a lot these days, but what does it mean exactly? The answer is both complex and straightforward. Put simply, a superfood is something you eat that is rich in things that are good for you. But, the answer does get more complicated because the term is not always used correctly. So, what is it that makes a superfood super?

What Defines Something as a Superfood?

A superfood diet provides more health benefits because these foods have exceptional nutrient density. A common example of a superfood is the blueberry. This fruit gets its beautiful blue color from the pigment anthocyanin, which is an antioxidant.

Antioxidants like anthocyanin are flavonoids that give foods, primarily fruits, and vegetables, their color. They help reduce the damage done by free radicals responsible for everything from aging to cancer. So there is a reason that doctors say to eat more fruits and vegetables. Blueberries can be just one on a long list of feel-good, organic superfoods you add to your diet to look best.

MacaThe maca plant is another superfood — one that has been around for more than 2,000 years. Its low-calorie, high-protein nutrition profile makes it a common ingredient in a superfood smoothie, among other things.

The maca plant is a cruciferous vegetable similar to cauliflower. Drying the root of the plant, which is the main edible part, turns it into a superfood protein powder.

It is probably best known as one of a few hormone-balancing superfoods, though, making it a great choice to get those beautiful curves.

Apples Like blueberries, apples partly make the list because they contain potent antioxidants such as quercetin and catechin. The skin of the apples is an excellent source of fiber, too. Fiber is essential to your diet because it keeps your gut healthy and lowers your risk of heart disease.

Chia Seeds These tiny seeds pack a powerful nutritional punch. They are rich in amino acids, fiber, and omega-3 fatty acids. They were once staples in the diets of both the Aztecs and Mayans. The word “chia” means strength.

The chia seed is a highly versatile food, too. You can add it to a superfood shake, salad, or even yogurt to get a little extra nutrition.

Flaxseed Like the chia seeds, the flaxseed is a powerhouse for omega-3 fatty acids and fiber. It also offers antioxidants and nutrients such as manganese. In addition, the flaxseed contains both soluble and insoluble fiber to keep everything regular.

Add flaxseed to a smoothie along with the best superfood powder you can find for an energy boost, especially if you are cutting back on meat. Flaxseed is high in protein, giving you lasting energy.

Acai Berry These gorgeous dark purple berries are not as well-known as some of the others on the list, but they are an impressive addition to any superfood diet. They have it all. They come packed full of fiber and protein. That dark color also means they are an impressive source of antioxidants too. They provide three times the antioxidants as blueberries.

Include a variety of different forms of content. Photographs and videos are particularly important because readers tend to be visual and want to see your product in action.
